All Things Real Estate Features Las Campanas Compadres

From the Sotheby’s International Realty Santa Fe Real Estate Blog:

http://santafesir.com/news/john-romero-and-las-campanas-compadres

John Romero and Las Campanas Compadres

By Lawrence Becerra, Chairman, Las Campanas Compadres

Las Companas Compadres

Las Campanas Compadres offers therapeutic riding and swimming lessons to people with special needs at the world class facilities of The Club at Las Campanas. Lessons are free and 100 percent supported by private donations.

John, age 24, has enjoyed the benefits of the Las Campanas Compadres therapeutic programs since they began.  He was born with cerebral palsy, has cortical visual impairment, and scoliosis. Both John and his mother, Darlene, serve on the charity’s board.  Even though John is wheelchair-bound, he has a creative spirit that craves action and adventure.  John has been an adaptive skier for fifteen consecutive years, is pursuing a media arts certificate, and is a volunteer photographer for Pandemonium Productions.  John represents LCC in the community to promote its programs.

The LCC swim program offers John a creative way to simultaneously strengthen and relax his body.  Buoyancy alleviates the usual effort it takes to move his own body and the liberating weightlessness in the water is unparalleled.  Darlene says, “After Dave guides John through his strengthening exercises, John enjoys time in the hot tub to relax his muscles. After an LCC swim lesson, the tension in John’s body is radically reduced.”

The positive therapeutic effects of hippotherapy for disabled people who live with limited movement and concurrent muscle weakness or tightness are substantial.  LCC’s transferring/lifting equipment makes the riding experience safer. While LCC’s volunteer side-walkers help the rider with positioning and balance throughout the lesson, the riding program’s special adaptive saddle is supportive enough to allow riders to sit on the horse without a back rider.

John tells us, “When the LCC saddle arrived, I didn’t need someone to ride behind me and hold me upright anymore. The special saddle gives me freedom and independence. I feel safe in the saddle, so now I can use the reins and control the horse. Trotting is the most fun. I like to set goals and reach them.”

John experiences the physical benefits of riding which simultaneously promote relaxation and an exhilarating way to strengthen and exercise little-used muscles. Possibly an even weightier life benefit is that John comes away from a riding lesson with increased confidence and an emotional boost at successfully practicing communication skills and accomplishing his riding goals.  “Mostly, I have fun with Karen and my LCC friends. They encourage me and we laugh a lot,” John says.

For the past four years Las Campanas Compadres has held a mini tri fund raising event on the grounds of The Club at Las Campanas. This is the charity’s only fund raising event and its success ensures the continuation of this worthwhile program. This year’s event will be held on Labor Day, September 1st. Expectations are for 200 participants.

To learn more about the event, or the program and how you can help, please visit www.lascampanascompadres.org, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing therapeutic riding and swimming instruction to people with special needs. Las Campanas Compadres is being profiled as part of the All Things Real Estate “Unique Destinations” series.

All Things Real Estate is proud to partner with Las Companas Compadres.  Join us on the air this week, Sunday from 12 – 2 p.m. MST on Talk 1260 AM.  Visit ATREradio.com to learn more.

Labor Day Mini-Tri Plans Are Underway!

It’s  already time to start planning for the Las Campanas Compadres  Labor Day Mini Triathlon!

Co-founder, Lawrence Becerra was recently on the Rey Post, “All Things Real Estate”  New Year radio program  to talk about Las Campanas Compadres beginnings, goals, and especially, the September 1, 2014  annual fundraising event.

You can hear the podcast of the interview by clicking on the link below:

http://www.santafe.com/the-voice/podcast/all-things-real-estate-first-hour-january-5-2014#.UsoROfRDt9U

In the interview, Lawrence describes LCC’s part  in the private sector  filling in the gaps that exist because  insurance coverage has slimmed and federal funding has been curbed to provide necessary life-fulfilling and therapeutic activities for people with disabilities.

There are several ways you can take part to keep the LCC therapeutic riding and swimming programs  remain healthy and strong.

It is already time for the community to save the date and start thinking about their involvement in LCC’s annual fundraising event. You can:

  • Become a sponsor or contact a local or national business to sponsor the 2014 LCC Mini-Triathlon
  • Participate in the Mini-Tri  (enter to race in all three events, or form a team for bicycling, swimming, and running)
  • Become a team-mate on a special needs team
  • Fund raise by sponsoring a special needs student
  • Volunteer on race day to help organizers keep everyone safe

Until the Mini-tri registration site is online, you can already  learn more about how you can be involved in LCC’s  Labor Day fundraising event.

For more Mini-Tri information or to volunteer:  email Las Campanas Compadres at  lascamp@msn.com

Or use the “Contact Us” tab on the LCC website: http://lascampanascompadres.org/    to communicate how you want to help or to request information.

Make 2014 your year of involvement.

Labor Day LCC Mini-Tri Re-cap

The day dawned ethereal; a perfect, genteel lady.  She wore a lace-cloud mantilla. With her delicate fan she wafted a cool, high desert perfume over the Mini-triathlon swimmers, bicyclists and runners.

At The Club at Las Campanas Fitness, Tennis and Spa, the excitement of the morning electrically threaded its way throughout those thoroughly focused and intent on organizing, racing, or cheering.

Marathoners were registered, numbered and marked by 7:45 a.m.  Swimmers formed a queue to begin the three-event Mini-triathlon. Bicycling team mates were tagged by swimmers and left from the fenced bicycle “cage” for that portion of the marathon.  As bicyclists returned, runners sprinted off for the final 3.03-mile event of the marathon.

Once the final marathon runner returned, as if on cue, the morning’s genteel lady departed and her boisterous, bright sister graced the crowd with hearty joy and sunshine for the awards ceremony. Images were captured of the smiling faces of yellow-clad volunteers, victorious marathon participants, and the LCC families they Club Frontall were supporting.

Photographs of the Las Campanas Compadres 5th annual 2013 Mini-Triathlon are shared on the LCC website (www.lascampanascompadres.org).  Click the tab “Events and Photos” to see the Mini-Tri’s images stored on “Shutterfly”.

The Las Campanas Compadres Facebook page has additional images of the Labor Day annual fundraising events, including the Pasta Dinner. You can see those at https://www.facebook.com/lccsantafe  in the “photos” section.

Culminating on Mini-Tri Day is the spirit of caring for and giving to others, which propels the intense and detailed machinations of well-organized teamwork.

Perhaps the profound thanks (which truly is beyond words) to the many people who make the annual fundraiser become a successful reality, (The Club at Las Campanas staff, financial sponsors, auction donors, organizers, volunteers, and the race participants) is best expressed in the happy, proud, and carefree faces of the riders and swimmers who take part in the Las Campanas Compadres programs all year round.  When you give of yourself, these special people are able to achieve goals that make their lives richer, fuller and more meaningful.
